Wakka wakka wakka wakka wakka! If eating dots, fruit, and blue ghosts holds a special place in your heart, Pac-Man Championship Edition DX is a must-play game. This truly is Pac-Man at it’s finest.
Ghosts are the name of the game in Championship Edition DX. Not only are your favorite colorful buddies Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde back in their classic Pac-Man fashion, taking different paths to catch up with everyone’s favorite yellow eating machine, but there are sleeping green ghosts all over the entire map that start to chase you in a chain after you pass them. And let me tell you, there are few more satisfying moments in my gaming history, than turning around to eat through a chain of 50+ ghosts.
The ghosts are just one part of the redefined gameplay that makes it much easier to extend a life in order for the game’s true goal, getting the highest score possible. As you travel around the screen eating through dots, you cause more fruit to pop up on screen, and each fruit resets half of the screen adding more dots and more ghosts to the mix, so you continue to play while you guide Pac-Man and his insatiable hunger to more dots, fruit, and ghosts watching that score climb higher into the millions.
Speaking of the screen, there is no shortage of unique screens to play on. Not only does your selected level change with each refresh after eating a new fruit, but there are many different types, color schemes, and styles of visuals from throughout the history of Pac-Man that are contained in this game from 3d type levels, to 8-bit, to flashy neon dynamic walls.
Beyond the normal 5-minute and 10-minute score attacks, Championship Edition DX will keep you coming back to see how many ghosts you can eat through in one combo, and if you can beat the multitude of time-trials for each level.
I mentioned earlier that the game does it’s part to assist the player in extending each life. The first way it goes about this is slowing down time when the player is close to death, giving him or her the best chance to pick the correct path toward survival. If that isn’t enough, you are also given bombs that will clear all of the ghosts directly in front of you, as well as the chain that is following you, and resets them to the center of the screen giving you some breathing time. Staying alive in Championship Edition DX keeps the action going and definitely helps to make this the best Pac-Man experience out there.
The sound effects are classic Pac-Man, and I don’t think we would want anything else. However, the music has a new techno feel to it that keeps the energy level high and helps to build the action up as the speed of the game increases and the tension builds until that all-so-satisfying chomping of ghosts.
Pac-Man Championship Edition DX is not only the greatest Pac-Man experience you can get your hands on, but it is undoubtedly one of the greatest games available on the Playstation Network. To top it all off, it’s free to Playstation Plus members.
This game gives you everything you’d expect from Pac-Man, and so much more 10/10.
